Artificial Breeding, Nucleus Insertion and Pearl Culture Techniques of (Pinctada maxima, (Jameson)


The achievement was conferred National Science Congress Award in 1978, First Class of Science and Technology Advancement Award by Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery Ministry in 1985, and First Class of National Science and Technology Advancement Award in 1987.


SCSFRI successfully achieved in the artificial breeding of Pinctada maxima(Jameson) in 1970 for the first time. The international advanced technologies of artificial reproduction, larval rearing and mariculture of Pinctada maxima(Jameson) were then established, which laid the foundation for the development of big pearl industry.

The pearl cultivation with nucleus insertion technique was developed successfully in 1981. The first commercial big pearl was produced (size: 19.0 mm*15.5 mm, weight: 6 g, color: silvery white, shape: grape). This achievement has been popularized and applied in South China widely.



Artificial Pond Breeding of Bighead (Aristichthys nobilis, Richardson, 1844) and Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Valenciennes,1844)


The project was awarded National Science Committee Invention Award in 1965, National Science Congress Award in 1978 and Science Congress Award of Guangdong Province in 1979.


The project was started from the research on the artificial breeding of the pond-cultured fish in 1953. In June of 1958, the bighead and silver carp cultured in the pond spawned and hatched successfully after the flow-water stimulation and pituitary hormone injection. Then, Myulopharyngodon picens, Ctenopharynfodon idellus and Cirrhiua molitorella were bred artificially with these techniques. Artificial breeding of domesticated fish was not only pioneering work but also a great invention of aquaculture science and technology in the world; it had changed the fry production method of domesticated fish, which depended on fishing in rivers for the past thousands of years, and contributed greatly to the rapid development of the freshwater culture in China.




Surveys on Marine Organisms and Fishery Resources around Island Waters of Guangdong Province

   
The project was awarded First Class of Science and Technology Advancement Award of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, First Class of Science and Technology Advancement Award of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences in 1994, and Third Class of National Science and Technology Advancement Award in 1996, respectively.


The project investigated the marine organisms and fishery resources around 759 islands waters in Guangdong Province, reported the species composition of the marine organisms, flora character, quantity variation and distribution of important fishery resources, described the areas where major fishes and cephalopods frequently appeared as well as the catch composition, demonstrated the characteristics of marine environment and recourses, assessed the exploitation status and prospective of island fishery, which filled the gap in the research on the fishery resources of continental shelf in Guangdong Province and strengthened the scientific basis of coastal fishery resources in Guangdong province.




Study on the South China Sea Mussel Observation System


    The study achieved great success and was awarded Science and Technology Advancement Award of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (First Class) in 1995, Science and Technology Advancement Award of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs(Second Class) in 1996, and National Science and Technology Advancement Award (Third Class) in 1998, respectively.


This project studied, demonstrated and established the South China Sea Mussel Observation System. So far, the system was applied to monitoring, studying and forecasting the spatio-temporal changes and trend of the main pollutants in northern South China Sea. It has provided scientific basis for the prevention & control of coastal pollution, management and conservation of marine environment, which made possible a simple and available, effective and low-cost technology in monitoring and studying on the marine environment of China.





Artificial Propagation and Larval Rearing of Grey Mullet (Mugil cephalus Linnaeus)

   
It was awarded Science and Technology Advancement Award of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (Second Class) in 1996, Science and Technology Advancement Award of Guangdong Province (Second Class) in 1996, Science and Technology Advancement Award of Ocean and Fishery Bureau of Guangdong Province (First Class) in 1996, National Science and Technology Advancement Award (Third Class) in 1997.


In January of 1992, SCSFRI achieved the breakthrough of the artificial breeding of grey mullet for the first time in Guangdong province, reaching an international advanced level. A set of techniques of artificial breeding of grey mullet suitable for the practice in South China were established, including the parental fish culture, induction of spawning and hatch of the fertilized egg, continuous production of palatable feed, long-distance transports of live fish and so on, which is very significant for the development of the grey mullet culture in South China.





Survey and Assessment of Marine Life Resources and Habitat Environment in EEZ and Continental Shelf in China


This achievement was conferred Second-Class Prize of National Sci-Tech Advancement. It is the most systematic and comprehensive synchronization survey and assessment of the marine life resources and their habitat environment in Bohai, Yellow Sea, East China Sea and South China Sea in the recent 20 years. It not only develops evaluation methods for all-layer, multi-species bio-resources and fishery environment, but also improves the technology in survey and assessment of marine life in China. Thus, it provides basic data and technical mappings for international marine fishery management directly, and provides reliable, systematic basic data and important scientific basis for the conservation of marine resources, exploration of new fishery developmental model and fishery management on ecosystem level for now and future in China.




Innovation and Application of Key Technology of Variety Improvement, Scalization and Modernization in Processing of Tilapia

Innovation and Application of Key Technology of Variety Improvement, Scalization and Modernization in Processing of Tilapia was conferred Second-Class Prize of National Sci-Tech Advancement and other awards; Key Technology of Selecting Fine Varieties and Industrialization of Tilapia was conferred First-Class Prize of Sci-Tech Advancement of Guangdong Province; Key Technology of Genetic Analysis, Selecting Fine Varieties and Industrialization of Tilapia was conferred First-Class Prize of Sci-Tech Advancement of Ministry of Education; Key technology of Variety Improvement and Export of Tilapia was conferred Third-Class Prize of Shen Nong Sci-Tech Chinese Agriculture; Extension of Low-consumption Processing and Quality Control Technology of Tilapia Fillets was conferred Second-Class Prize of Agricultural Technology Extension in Guangdong Province.


The achievement for the first time researches on high-value processing and quality safety of tilapia, analyzes the distribution rule for the poisonous and harmful substances in tilapia, as well as establishes the database of hazardous substances. It also for the first time sets up a warming system for food-borne pathogenic microorganisms of tilapia; studies the appropriate use of disinfectant and processing aids in the course of processing tilapia, low-consumption processing technology, and good operation rules for tilapia processing have also been drawn up. Moreover, we initially realize the zero waste processing of tilapia, having developed recreational food such as antihypertensive peptides in collagen protein, endogenous enzyme, activated calcium, fish oil and fish skin, etc.. We also apply new technology to systematically study seafood seasoning. The achievement increases the quality and added value of tilapia products, develops diversified tilapia products, and promotes the healthy, sustainable development of tilapia industry, achieving great social and economical benefits.



Technology and Application of Breeding & Industrialized Aquaculture of Sturgeon

Technology and Application of Breeding & Industrialized Aquaculture of Sturgeon was conferred Second-Class Prize of National Sci-Tech Advancement; Research and Application of Key Technology in Industry Chain of Sturgeon Caviar was conferred Second-Class Prize of Sci-Tech Advancement of Zhejiang Province.


The achievement establishes for the first time the method of quality evaluation of sturgeon caviar and lays down the standard for sturgeon caviar products. For the comprehensive utilization of by-product from sturgeon caviar processing, we focus on developing high-value processed products such as liquid-smoked sturgeon fillets, fish oil, chondroitin sulfate and collagen protein, etc.. Especially, the method for quality evaluation and product standard for sturgeon caviar have been extensively applied, and some integrated technologies have also been promoted to industry, which realizes a breakthrough in earning foreign exchange through export of Chinese artificial bred sturgeon caviar with 3.6 t first-class caviar (production, processing and export) and an export value of 2.16 million Euro. The achievement has significant social benefits, for example, promotes the development of intensive processing industry of sturgeon in China, builds the sturgeon industry chain which targets international market, and facilitates sturgeon industry in enriching the people.



Artificial Breeding of Penaeus monodon

Artificial Breeding of Penaeus monodon was conferred First-Class Prize of Sci-Tech Advancement of Hainan Province and First-Class Prize of Sci-Tech Advancement of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences; Demonstration and Extension of Technology and Achievement of Artificial Breeding of Penaeus monodon was conferred First-Class Prize of Agricultural Technology Extension in Guangdong Province.


The achievement, combining technologies of artificial breeding of Penaeus monodon brood stock, healthy and large-scale seed rearing of P.monodon without WSSV and healthy culture of P.monodon to establish a technological system of artificial breeding of P.monodon, solves the problem that had not been solved for dozens of years. Its application in aquaculture and production has achieved good economical and social benefits. This integrated technological system has been applied in a demonstrative area of 31700 mu in Guangdong, Hainan, etc., reaching an output value of RMB 248.14 million and profit & tax 68.3 million. The healthy culture technology for P.monodon has been applied in a demonstrative area of 102300 mu in Guangdong, Hainan, etc., reaching an output value of RMB 1.35461 billion and profit & tax 371. 55 million; and the technology has been extended to an area of over 200 000 mu since 2004, occupying about 60% of P.monodon aquaculture industry.



Research and Application of Deep-Water Anti-Wave Cage

    The project of “Research and application of deep-water anti-wave cage” lays a foundation for the research on technology of deep-water anti-wave cage, which makes China become one of the few countries which comprehensively master deep-water cage technology, promoting the development of mariculture. Moreover, breakthrough has been achieved in studies on the global problem of fishing gears’ hydrodynamic properties which are more complicated than stiffened structure in ocean engineering. Since we first developed water modeling system in China, the country’s ability of design and manufacture of deep-water cage has been greatly improved.



This achievement can be applied in everywhere in South China and other important coastal provinces in China. Compared with similar cages in foreign countries, the deep-water anti-wave cage we developed has the following advantages: typhoon-resistant ability (Class 14) is much better than Norway’s (Class 10); anti-wave ability (4~6 m) is better than Norway’s (3~5 m); anti-current ability (0.75 m/sec) is better than Norway’s (0.45 m/sec). Until 2011 July, 3612 HDPE-C43 and HDPE-C60 deep-water cages have been used in South China, having saved 1.92 billion Yuan. Cumulative new economic effects of over 5.572 billion Yuan has been generated by cage manufacture and cage culture. This project has achieved 14 state authorized patents, among which two are registered by software copyright. All patents have been applied in industrial development and utilization. Based on the project, two provincial guidelines were made, one book was published, 36 papers were published in core journals, and three provincial or ministry demonstration bases for deep-water cage culture were established.
